Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim HRA exemption under the new tax regime?
No. HRA exemption is available under the old tax regime, not the default new tax regime. Compare your complete tax liability under both regimes before choosing solely on the basis of HRA.
Why does the calculator ask for months?
Salary, rent and HRA can change during a financial year. A months selector gives a more realistic estimate for joining mid-year or moving house, although multiple rent/salary changes may require separate period calculations.
What salary is used for the HRA percentage tests?
It is not total CTC. The relevant salary base generally includes Basic, eligible DA and eligible commission calculated as a fixed percentage of turnover achieved.
Which cities get the 50% HRA salary test?
Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai use the 50% test. Other locations use 40%.
