Frequently Asked Questions

What inflation rate should I use?

There is no single correct long-term rate. RBI's inflation target is 4% with a tolerance band, but personal inflation can differ from headline CPI. Use scenarios and test a higher rate for expenses that historically feel more inflation-sensitive to your household.

Why are education and healthcare shown as scenarios rather than facts?

Their future inflation is uncertain and can vary greatly by institution, city and service. The presets are deliberately labelled assumptions so you can stress-test a goal instead of treating a historical average as guaranteed.

Is real return simply investment return minus inflation?

That subtraction is only an approximation. This calculator uses the compounded relationship: (1 + nominal return) divided by (1 + inflation), minus 1.

What does investment value in today's money mean?

It discounts the projected future investment value by your inflation assumption, showing the approximate purchasing power of that future amount in today's rupees.
